Once the pencil is laid down I begin from top to bottom, right to left.

I typically focus on adding darker tones first, and lightening them up with lighter shades/tones when necessary.

I use a set of Prismacolor colored pencils as well as a Prismacolor colorless blending pencil to blend my tones.

Adding in final tones before finishing up by lightening the sides and edges of the portrait.
